Scar Trees
91 x 121 cm
Acrylic on Canvas

When a canoe, shield or carrying vessel was need, the bark was taken from the tree without killing it.  Each time it was taken from the side of the tree which was not exposed to the direct hot sun and the harsh winds. This left a scar that was sometimes decorated to show who had taken the bark and for what purpose. These trees are still found today in many areas of Australia and is a very real symbol of the past.

The Great Lawman, the Emu drinks from the river of smoke in the Milky Way: the river of smoke is formed by the fires of all our ancestors, who's spirits go up to the Milky Way when they die. The great Emu draws inspiration and knowledge from those old spirits for he is The Lawman, he is the creator and keeper of the laws of man. He comes to earth every night when the sky is clear and the Sky World is once again reflected in the rivers in order to hand down the laws.
